Oprah’s Sirius channel has disappeared from satellite radio after their second contract had expired. But having it just vanish without any warning is odd, and some listeners feel left out, according to the New York Daily News. Some people thought it was rude.
“I listen to Oprah everyday … I don’t know if she cares about her listeners,” one listener said on a blog.
It’s been a struggle for the Sirius channel. Oprah has faced problems in the past, especially with her TV network deal, which is still on the air under the OWN brand. The satellite channel launched as Oprah and Friends, amid much fanfare, at a time when satellite radio was working to raise its profile by attracting big names such as Oprah and Howard Stern.
“I am excited about this opportunity,” she said in 2006.
However, Oprah’s Sirius channel has faced problems before, when in 2009 she re-launched it. She expanded the 24/7 channel featuring a diverse and lively programming lineup that will inform, entertain and inspire listeners across the country to live their best lives, according to the Examiner. Daily and weekly shows were hosted by Gayle King, poet and bestselling author Dr. Maya Angelou, medical expert Dr. Mehmet Oz, fitness trainer Bob Greene. Dr. Laura Berman, the renowned sex therapist also had her own show, alongside financial expert Jean Chatzky, acclaimed psychologist Dr. Robin Smith, and design expert Nate Berkus
“With the channel’s re-launch and expanded live programming we expect Oprah Radio will now reach even more people with its message of motivating people to live their best lives,” said Scott Greenstein, President and Chief Content Officer, SIRIUS XM Radio in 2009. “On the unique platform of satellite radio, Oprah Radio-powered by Oprah Winfrey and her unparalleled team of experts-offers SIRIUS XM listeners extraordinary inspiration and information daily.”
SiriusXM also got some good financial news Thursday. It added 1.75 million subscribers in 2014, above its original projections, and now has 27.3 million. It expects to add 1.2 million this year and projects revenues of $4.4 billion.
The changes made to the channel appeared to be working, but going completely off-the-air because the contract expired isn’t sitting well with listeners.
Oprah’s Sirius channel deal reportedly $18 million for three years. While the second deal may have been for less, SiriusXM has been cutting costs lately, notes Starcasm. The satellite radio network has also brought in a newer generation of marquee names, such as Jenny McCarthy, who are a more active presence.
