Robert De Niro Madoff - Actor Robert De Niro plans to take on the role of Ponzi schemer Bernie Madoff in an HBO biopic.

The network has confirmed that a made-for-television movie about Madoff is in its early stages of development and De Niro will play the disgraced financier, but noted that the film had not yet received the green light to start production.

De Niro and partner Jane Rosenthal will produce the project through their company Tribeca Productions. “Reservation Road” author John Burnham Schwartz is set to write the screenplay.

The film will use book “The Wizard of Lies: Bernie Madoff and the Death of Trust” by Diane Henrique as source material. Producers also obtained the rights to use another book, “Truth and Consequences: Life Inside the Madoff Family” by Laurie Sandell, which was written with the cooperation of Madoff’s son Andrew.

Madoff’s other son Mark committed suicide on the second anniversary of his father’s arrest. His widow Stephanie Madoff Mack recently released her own book, “The End of Normal: A Wife’s Anguish, A Widow’s New Life,” that chronicles her husband’s downward spiral into depression after he and his brother Andrew told police their father confessed to the multibillion-dollar scheme that costs thousands their life savings in December 2008.

After his arrest, Madoff, who pleaded guilty to securities fraud and other charges three month later, maintained that his family had no idea that he had been operating a $65 billion Ponzi scheme for at least two decades. The sons have never been charged but faced intense scrutiny and found their reputations and careers ruined.

Bernie Madoff is currently serving a 150-year-prison sentence at the Butner Federal Correctional Complex in North Carolina.
