Sean Penn reveals that his 14 year long rocky marriage to actress Robin Wright was a “fraud,” meaning she was never in love with him.

“There is no shame in saying that we all want to be loved by someone. As I look back over my life in romance, I don’t feel I’ve ever had that. I have been the only one that was unaware of the fraud in a few of these circumstances blindly,” he told Esquire magazine.

Penn and Wright began dating soon after Sean divorced singer, Madonna, in 1989. The couple had two children together in the early 90s before marrying in 1994.

The relationship began to go through on-and-off periods in the late 2000s. The couple first filed for divorce in December 2007, but reconciled several months later, requesting a court dismissal of their divorce case.

In April 2009, Penn filed for legal separation, only to withdraw the case once again when the couple reconciled in May. Then again, on August 12, 2009, Wright Penn filed for divorce, which was finalized on July 22, 2010, with the couple reaching a private agreement on child and spousal support, division of assets, and custody over their underage son.

Penn says that during the divorce proceeding is when the truth came out about the fraud that was their marriage.

“When you get divorced, all the truths come out. You sit there and go, ‘What the [bleep] was I doing? What was I doing believing that this person was invested in this way?’ Which is a fantastically strong humiliation in the best sense,” Penn explained.

Penn explained that it was a tough time for him going through the divorce and at the same time dealing with his son who suffered a serious head injury from a skateboarding accident, and that is why he went to Haiti after the earthquake to help.

“It can make somebody very bitter and very hard and closed off, but I find it does the opposite to me,” he says.
