Vesta Williams found dead in a Los Angles hotel room on Thursday. Williams was an R&B singer who had a huge hit with the song “Congratulations” in 1989. The cause of death is unknown.

Although Williams never had any albums certified gold nor any Top 40 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, she scored seven top 20 hits on the US Billboard R&B chart from the mid-1980s to the early 1990s.

The 48-year-old was pronounced dead September 22, 2011.

Williams was born in Coshocton, Ohio in 1963 and was sometimes credited by her full name or just as Vesta. She was known for her four-octave voice range. She scored her first record deal in 1986 with AandM records.

The singer began performing at an early age as a stand-up comic and singer in high school. Her family moved from Ohio to Los Angeles in the 1960s. Her father was a disc-jockey.

Her first released album was the self entitled “Vesta” and it featured the Top 10 R&B hit “Once Bitten, Twice Shy.”

In 2007, she released an album of R&B classics on the Shanachie label entitled “Distant Lover” that featured songs recorded by Bill Withers, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye, Sade and Deniece Williams.
