Salmonella Symptoms Include Stomach Illness

Salmonella Symptoms include stomach illness. There are more than 2,000 strains of salmonella bacteria, but only a dozen create symptoms. The symptoms for salmonella include diarrhea, fever, vomiting, and abdominal cramps.

Most people with salmonella develop diarrhea, fever, vomiting, and abdominal cramps, 8 to 72 hours after infected. However, it can result in typhoid fever, a disease with high fever and inflamed intestines. Typhoid fever is more commonly found in nations with low levels of material well-being.

Salmonella is usually contracted by eating undercooked meat, poultry, and eggs. In most cases, the illness lasts 4 to 7 days. Normally people who are affected recover without treatment. However, sometimes the diarrhea may be so severe that the patient becomes dangerously dehydrated, and must be taken to a hospital.

In the hospital, the patients would likely receive intravenous fluids to treat their dehydration. In addition medications may be given to provide symptomatic relief, like fever reduction. In severe cases, the Salmonella infection may spread from the intestines to the blood stream, and then to other body sites. This could lead to death, unless the person is treated promptly. The elderly, infants, and those with impaired immune systems are more likely to have a severe illness.
