Chevrolet Volt Travels Up To 40 Miles On Pure Electricity

General Motors Corp is still building a few prototypes for its upcoming 2011 Chevrolet Volt, but so far the electric vehicle is making progress. The latest plug-in prototype can travel up to 40 miles on a single battery charge without using fuel. GM is also working on a prototype to emit zero carbon emissions.

The Volt is built with a new revolutionary propulsion system. General Motors Corp names the GM Hybrid vehicle as an Extended-Range Electric Vehicle. The eco-friendly automobile offers a complete gas-free solution.

Chevy Volt is designed for commuters who drive less than 40 miles per day. The plug-in hybrid has a new revolutionary propulsion system to generate electric power with a gasoline engine. It provides extended drives when combined with the lithium-ion battery and gas-powered engine.

One of the things that separates this GM Hybrid automobile from others is the zero tailpipe emissions. Since the Volt is powered by electricity, it will produce lower overall emissions than vehicles powered by gasoline. Clean energy which provides electricity today is generated by a wide variety of different methods including wind, solar, hydropower and nuclear.

The drive, for up to 40 miles, will have zero tailpipe emissions, which are important to the environment and to improve air quality in the areas we live. The 40-mile drive can be either city or highway, as there is no difference with the Chevy Volt plug-in Hybrid. Moreover, electricity production is also getting cleaner each year as older coal plants are being replaced with newer, cleaner technologies and as more alternative energy including wind and solar.

Engineers worked on reducing aerodynamic drag while keeping the striking look of the Volt. This produced a rounder, smoother appearance that resulted in a coefficient of drag that is a 30 percent improvement over the first Volt concept automobile. Since the Volt relies on electricity as its primary fuel source, preserving the power stored in its battery is most important.

The Volt still has a long way to go to meet regular commuter travel demands. However, the automaker is still on-track and is hoping that its plug-in solution will be they key to its new infrastructure and reorganization.
