Ian Gibson was trampled to death by an elephant that was trying to escape. The safari hunter was attempting to kill the animal for sport, but the elephant turned and charged, according to The Inquisitr. The death was announced by the Safari Classics website.

“Ian was tragically killed by an elephant bull earlier today while guiding an elephant hunt in Chewore North. At very close range, Ian was able to get off one shot before the bull killed him. The scene was very graphic.”

Gibson was leading the hunt in Chewore North, Zimbabwe, when he spotted the bull elephant. An experienced hunter, he tracked the elephant until he was just as little as some 150 feet away front the beast. The elephant then turned and charged, trampling Gibson to death.

Paul Smith, managing director of Chifuti Safaris, the company who had hired Gibson to lead the hunt in Chewore North, said the exact circumstances of the incident were still unclear. Ian Gibson was trampled right before witnesses.

“The American client and the trackers are still too traumatized to give us full details,” he said.

Paul said Ian became a hunter 25-years-ago and was “fit and strong,” despite only having only one leg. He had already killed a leopard during the hunt, according to Examiner.

A note posted on the hunting forum Safari Classics said Gibson’s tracker Robert suggested the animal had been in musth, a period where it produces more testosterone than normal.

Before Ian Gibson was trampled on, he left the group he was with to rest and decided to track the bull anyway. He caught up with the animal between 50 and 10 meters away.

“The bull instantly turned and began a full charge” a witness said.

It paid tribute to him as a “fine man” and “one of the most experienced professional hunters on the African continent.”

It is unclear if the elephant was later killed.

As Ian Gibson was trampled on, his death received little sympathy online, notes Huffington Post UK. One person wrote simply: “Elephant 1 - scumbag 0.” Gibson received scrutiny by several animal rights activists in the past.
