An Ole Miss student who was beaten by five others from a rival fraternity were arrested Friday. University spokesman Danny Blanton said the university is pleased with the campus police investigation that led to charges in the cause, according to WFLA.
The student beaten, Jeremy Boyle, was reportedly in the Sigma Pi house when he heard something outside and went to investigate. He was then beaten by five members of Ole Miss Pi Kappa fraternity.
Tucker Steil, James Bastile, Kyle Hughes, Austin Rice and Christian Guyare were arrested following the assault, and now face charges ranging from felony assault to hazing. Steil faces the most severe charges of a felony in the case and causing aggravated injury.
Police say the Ole Miss student was beaten so badly he suffered from a concussion, a ruptured eardrum and several broken teeth. “It’s kind of like shocking,” eyewitness Rienzi Gray said. “I have never known people to beat people senseless.”
The alleged crime shook up a number of students. Many of them were concerned with the nature of the suspects’ mugshots as they appeared to be laughing.
Ole Miss administrators have remained quiet during the investigation. They have not responded to a request when asking about the campus policy.
“They are all smiling except one of them,” Gray said. “It’s just disgusting. How could you be happy?”
When a local TV station when to the Pi Kappa Alpha house to shoot some video and ask questions, they were asked to leave because they were parked illegally. The campus security, along with the fraternity, asked them to leave the property.
University of Mississippi police said Boyle screamed for help as he was beaten. Some students believe the fraternity as a whole should be punished.
“They descended upon him and beat him unmercifully-beat him within an inch of his life,” Boyle’s grandfather said “I believe there should be a penalty put on not only the five guys that beat the dude senseless, but the fraternity itself should be penalized,” student Julian Fuentes said.
The police report reveals Tucker Steil attacked Boyle with “hands, fists, and feet,” causing aggravated injuries. James Basile is also charged with assault, larceny, and hazing in connection to the incident.
“It is a very sad situation, but I heard about it. I was just like ‘How? What made them think this is OK?’ I mean, like what’s going on in the fraternities here that, you know, people are willing to beat up somebody,” Jessica Moore said.
The Pi Kappa Alpha and Sigma Pi houses sit catty-cornered to each other on fraternity row. The Old Miss student beaten took place outside the Pi Fraternity house around 4 a.m. on October 6.
