A man who was very intoxicated allowed his 8 year-old son drive his pick-up truck down an interstate highway in Louisiana while he slept. The man, Billy Joe Madden, also had his 4 year-old daughter in the back seat of the Chevy pick as the son drove. Police stopped the vehicle after receiving phone calls early Saturday morning that the truck was driving erratically and describing a very young person at the wheel.
The man allegedly told police he was letting his son drive while the family traveled between Mississippi and Texas. The boy was doing the speed limit, 70 mph, and pulled over when the police cruiser turned its lights on, authorities said. The boy apparently sat on the edge of the driver’s seat in order to reach the gas.
According to a newspaper report, Madden was charged with allowing a minor to drive, keeping an open container in the vehicle, driving without a seat belt, two counts of child desertion and two counts of no child restraint, according to the newspaper. The children meanwhile were taken into protective custody. Madden remains in Livingston Parish Detention Center in lieu of a $1474 bail, the sheriff’s deputy told Reuters.
Last month a 7 year-old boy was pulled over in Michigan after leading police on a wild chase. The boy who was in his pajama’s and barefoot was trying to see his father who lived separately from him. No one was injured in that incident either.By: Pat Prescott
