Ryan Watenpaugh fed dog meat to his estranged California girlfriend as a meal, although she had no idea what she ate.
According to Examiner, the 34-year-old Watenpaugh claims it’s all a prank. But his former girlfriend isn’t laughing — she says he is one sick puppy. Police arrested him on Thursday.
Ryan Watenpaugh did leave severed paws of the dog on her doorstep, and admitted it to authorities. The victim told police that she fled Watenpaugh after a Aug. 4 fight in which he allegedly assaulted her, according to the Record Searchlight. When she returned, the suspect and her dog, named Bear, were gone.
Police said Watenpaugh reportedly reconciled with the victim last week and cooked her a meal containing meat. On Sunday she received a text message from Watenpaugh asking how her dog tasted.
Ryan Watenpaugh left the paws of the dog in a bag on the woman’s front porch. Police said they found an AK-47 assault rifle and high-capacity magazines during a search of Watenpaugh’s home. Ryan was booked at the Shasta County Jail where his bail is set at $250,000.
Ryan Watenpaugh is charged with animal cruelty for the dog and with domestic violence, stalking and false imprisonment. After Watenpaugh pounced on her during an argument on Aug. 4, it was the last struggle in a series of violent assaults that left her cut and bruised. She fled the apartment, she said.
When she came back home later, Watenpaugh was gone, and so was Bear.
In September, the two made up, and Ryan Watenpaugh cooked her dinner one night, she told police. On Sunday, she received a chilling text asking how her dog tasted. She immediately broke up with him, but the unsettling messages didn’t stop: The 34-year-old kept texting her the detail his plans for the rest of the pup’s remains, she said.
On Tuesday, Ryan Watenpaugh took the dog torment to an even creepier level. That’s when the victim said she watched him drop off a bag on her front porch and quickly dashed off. When the women peeped inside the sack, she found two dog paws.
However, Watenpaugh now insisted that he did not kill or cook Bear, but he did confess that he sent the creepy texts and left the paws - which belonged to another dog, not Bear - at his ex’s home.
It’s not clear where Ryan Watenpaugh got the dog paws in the first place. Police said his story keeps changing. His girlfriend says the paws are from Bear.
