Skype 4.0 Improves VoIP Video Calling

Skype has rolled out a new release of its VoIP communications software. The new version improves voice-over-IP video calling and has a new built-in Internet bandwidth manager that provides faster data transfers using a microphone or webcam.

Skype Limited rolled out a new release of its VoIP communications software on Tuesday. The new 4.0 version enhances voice-over-IP video calling and has a built-in Internet bandwidth manager which provides faster data transfers using a microphone or webcam. In addition, it offers users state-of-the-art wideband audio quality during phone calls.

“Whether it’s saying hello to your daughter at college or reading a book to your child while you’re away on business–video calling lets you have the conversations that make a difference, and it really feels almost as good as being there,” Mike Bartlett, director of product strategy for Skype, said in a statement.

Skype 4.0 is available for Microsoft Windows and Vista and was derived based on user feedback. The new VoIP software offers face-to-face video calling and a new full-screen video interface. Voice calling enables users to make free video calls and instant messages to SMS mobile phone devices.

“Video calling has emerged as a very popular way for people to communicate online,” Bartlett said.

VoIP calling is growing in demand as many people are using the preferred free calling to communicate with family, friends, and colleagues from work. Version 4.0 embraces a new built-in bandwidth manager that can offer improved video calling that can deliver up to 30 frames per second on a low-bandwidth connection. The company recommends using 400 Kb/s or higher for high broadband connections.

While the VoIP quality has improved, the new software has a polished Conversations Tab which can keep track of multiple voice-over-IP conversations. Switching between conversations is seamlessly and the new tab allows a user to resize their connection screens. So far, this has been the best upgrade for Skype in a long time
