​Former MLB Player Enzo Hernandez Found Dead In Venezuela​​

Enzo Hernandez was found dead-on Sunday Jan. 13 in his home in El Tigre, Venezuela approximately 210 miles southeast of Caracas.

The Venezuelan sports newspaper Lider reported that Hernandez committed suicide. The former Major League Baseball player would have turned 64 in February, 2013.

From the Associated Press: Quoting a tweet from journalist John Guatache, the [The Sunday Leader] said the former player “in recent months had been treated for depression.”

A spokesperson for the El Tigre municipal police department confirmed Hernandez’s death but would not give any details about his cause of death.

Jose Grasso Vecchio, president of the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League, tweeted that Hernandez’s death was “sad news” and that Hernandez and Dave Concepcion were the “heirs to Luis Aparicio” among Venezuelan shortstops.

Hernandez played as a shortstop for the San Diego Padres from 1971–1977 and then the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1978.
