Kevin Ward’s Family blames Tony Stewart for aggressive driving in a race that caused the death of another driver.
According to Examiner, the Kevin Ward family has lashed out at the NASCAR driver on social media to share their fury with the world. One family member called the NASCAR driver a “di*k” and said he left her family with a “deep hurt that should not be there.” Sheriff Philip C. Povero of Ontario County, New York, said:
“This is an ongoing investigation, and all options remain available … We’re continuing to gather and analyze every piece of evidence we can.”
The parents were reportedly in the stands watching Ward in the race. They were a bit more diplomatic, according to local ABC affiliate WHAM:
“We appreciate the prayers and support we are receiving from the community, but we need time to grieve and wrap our heads around all of this.”
Tony Stewart’s car passes Kevin Ward’s sprint car before the driver was hit. Ward was walking on the track during a dirt-track race in upstate New York on Saturday night, authorities said. The 20-year-old died from injuries suffered in the incident at the Empire Super Sprints series event at the Canandaigua Motorsports Park. The track is about a two-hour drive from Watkins Glen International race track, where Tony Stewart had been scheduled to race in a NASCAR event Sunday.
When watching the video, Stewart bumped the car driven by Ward, which spun out. It was at that time when a yellow caution flag was display. Even though the driver was out of his car and walking onto the track, Stewart continued around the half-mile course. As Stewart approached on its next lap, Ward was “pointing and gesturing, apparently toward Stewart”.
Tony Stewart decided not to take part in Sunday’s event, but did say this:
“There aren’t words to describe the sadness I feel about the accident that took the life of Kevin Ward Jr. … It’s a very emotional time for all involved. … My thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and everyone affected by this tragedy.”
Stewart’s team director, Greg Zipadelli, released a statement about the Ward incident:
“Our hearts go out to Kevin’s family … This is a very tough, very emotional time for everybody — his family, our family at Stewart-Haas Racing.”
On Saturday night, Kevin Ward’s sprint car hit the outside wall during lap 14 of a 25-lap race, Povero said.
A video of the incident shows two cars coming out of a turn with Tony Stewart’s car passes sliding up the track toward Kevin Ward’s sprint car. The two cars get close and appear to make contact before Ward hits the wall and spins out. Another car narrowly avoids hitting the 13 car as its sits on the track facing the wrong direction.
While many don’t see this as Stewart’s fault, others are claiming he sped up instead of slowing down when seeing Ward on the track. He “throttled” his car right before he hit driver, according to the family. “Fox and Friends” reports that Stewart was “questioned again” about running down a fellow driver, reports Elisabeth Hasselbeck live on Monday.
The Kevin Ward Family is furious with Tony Stewart. In the video, Ward points a finger and appears to be yelling. Stewart’s car passes close, and it appears that its right rear tire hits him on the track.
