Legionnaires has been found at a Las Vegas resort. The infectious disease has been detected at the Aria Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. The hotel is notifying guests to be tested for legionnaires who stayed from June 21 to July 4, 2011.

The outbreak was confirmed by the local health district. The hotel is part of a vast collection of hotel rooms, condominiums and its own shopping center. The resort has been connected with six cases of the disease.

Testing taken proved, the resort found concentrations of the legionella bacteria in several of the guest rooms. “You can drink legionella and not get ill, you actually have to inhale very small droplets in order to get the disease,” Patricia Rowley of the Southern Nevada Health District told the local news channel.

Legionellosis is a potentially fatal infectious disease caused by Gram negative, aerobic bacteria belonging to the genus Legionella. The disease is the more severe form of the infection and produces pneumonia. It got its name in July 1976 when an outbreak of pneumonia occurred among people attending a convention of the American Legion at the Bellevue-Stratford Hotel in Philadelphia. On January 18, 2021 the causative agent was identified as a previously unknown strain of bacteria, subsequently named Legionella. Some people can be infected with the Legionella bacteria and have only mild symptoms or no illness at all.

Guests before the reported window of June 21 to July 4 are past the incubation period of the bacteria, so any symptoms they would’ve shown are past, said Sizemore. From the six reported cases of Legionnaires’ disease, all six had healthy recoveries, said Sizemore.
