Snow in Los Angeles has closed Interstate 5 in California. Snow is causing the route to be jammed for miles in Los Angeles. Ice is also causing a backup as long as 30 miles on the highway.

Motorists found themselves stranded after Interstate 5 was closed for a second day on Monday about 70 miles north of Los Angeles.

"Some motorists reported driving for 12 hours or more to get back to Los Angeles from points north over the last 24 hours as snow levels dropped to below 2,000 feet, closing mountain pass routes such as the Grapevine."

"It took us two hours to go five miles," Charlie Crandall, who was trying to return north after visiting relatives in San Diego, said in a statement. Although he and his friends were lucky enough to receiving lodging, more than hundreds of motorists stayed overnight in their cars.

"A lot of people slept in their cars last night," Crandall said.

The California Highway Patrol said the best route to Los Angeles from the north is the 101 Freeway. Scattered showers should clear up for a cool and dry weekend, according to the National Weather Service.
