Baby: Holland Tunnel Commuters Witness Birth Of Boy

A baby named Nassim Mohammed Elkarhat was born in the Holland Tunnel in traffic Wednesday as parents Abdel and Soukaina were on their way to the Brooklyn hospital following extreme labor pains.

A Port Authority Tunnel Officer, George McCann, actually delivered the baby after the father sought help after realizing they were out of time.

The precious newborn opened its eyes as traffic whizzed by.

“I didn’t know if I should stop inside the tunnel or just keep moving until I got out,” Abdel said. He kept moving, stopping at the tunnel exit to seek help. Port Authority Tunnel and Bridge Officer George McCann, who is trained for emergency medical response, then helped with the delivery.

“The father was really frantic,” McCann told the New York Daily News. A father of two children himself, the 52-year-old added: “You could tell he was a new father. He was running around screaming, ‘Help me! Help me!’”

The famous Holland Tunnel runs under the Hudson River, connecting New York’s Manhattan with Jersey City.
