A 4-year-old boy was killed by dogs that attacked him at a friend’s home in Kent County, Delaware, Wednesday afternoon. According to police, the three dogs have been euthanized since the boy’s death. The animal remains have been sent for rabies testing, according to Lisa Chase of First State Animal Center-SPCA.

The boy was identified as Kasii Haith, and his mother as Kyiesha Haith, according to Master Cpl. Gary E. Fournier. The 24-year-old woman and her son, who live in the Camden area, were visiting one of the mother’s female friends when the attack occurred, Fournier said. The women were in the house and the son was alone in the unfenced yard..

“At about 10:30 p.m. that night, the little boy ate ice cream in the living room of the home while his mother spoke to his aunt, uncle, and his 15-year-old cousin in another part of the house,” the Examiner reports. “Their conversation ended when Logan’s screams rang out.” The mother was bitten several times by the dogs on both arms while trying to save the boy.

The 4-year-old boy had been killed by the same dogs that he visited “numerous times in the past” without incident, Fournier added. The mother at one point “looked out the window and observed her son being attacked by the dogs.” She ran outside before he was killed, while her friend called 911.

Two heating, ventilation and air-conditioning repairmen who were working at the house also tried to save the boy. They tried “fending off the animals with PVC piping and assisting the mother from the attacking dogs,” he said.

State police and emergency medical services personnel who responded to the scene began first aid, but the boy was pronounced dead at the scene, he said. Authorities made the announcement that he was killed about an hour later.

The boy’s body was turned over the Office of the State Medical Examiner for autopsy.

The boy’s mother, who is several months pregnant, was transported by ambulance to Kent General Hospital in Dover for treatment of her injuries from the dogs and observation related to her pregnancy.

The dogs that killed the 4-year-old boy were removed by the First State Animal Center and SPCA near Camden. “The dogs were turned over to us for euthanasia,” executive director Kevin Usilton said. “The owner will not get them back.”
