Calvin Wright pearl removed from ear after 41 years; Since he was 5. Calvin Wright held up a small pearl that was removed after 41 years. It was part of his mother's necklace that somehow entered his ear when he was 5 years old.
Wright and his sister, Regina Coleman, were playing with their mother's necklace when it broke. As the pair wrestled with the loose pearls, one got stuck in his ear, or at least they thought there was only one. A doctor removed one and and the 5-year-old didn't think about it again until he went to the hospital a few weeks ago with a nasty cold.
"[The nurse] said, 'Mr. Wright, before you leave I need to check you.''' said Wright. "She checked my left ear first, then my right. Then she asked me if I used Q-Tips. I do and she said, 'You've got one stuck in your ear.'" However, that wasn't all. "She was trying to get it and it started hurting. All these years it never felt like that, so I said, 'Wait a minute. Wait a minute.' She said, 'That's a pearl in your ear.'"
Wright's family and friends said the pearl only caused one problem.
"My family and everyone that knew me would say I talk too loud," said Wright.
And though it's not as pretty as it once was, Wright said the pearl will stay with him.
"Keep it for a lifetime," said Wright. "It's sentimental, and it's a part of me. It grew with me."
