Eating nuts can reduce prostate cancer mortality rates by over a third, according to a new study developed by a team of researchers in Boston. Most nutritionists include nuts such as pine nuts, walnuts, cashews or tree nuts in each healthy diet due to the benefits these products offer to consumers.

A group of researchers from the Harvard Medical School in Boston found that tree nuts can significantly lower the mortality risks associated with prostate cancer. They noted that patients who eat tree nuts four or five times a week would reduce the possibility of death caused by prostate cancer by 34 percent.

“This suggests nuts, although not associated with being diagnosed with cancer, may still improve the overall survival of patients,” wrote the researchers in a press release, who made sure to stress that nuts aren’t to be confused as a way to prevent cancer itself.

Funded by the International Tree Nut Council, the study was recently published in the last edition of British Journal Cancer. During the research, experts monitored the lifestyle of more than 47,000 men for over 26 years.

Apart from the fact that nuts can reduce prostate cancer mortality rates, they do have many other health benefits people should consider. There are many healthy, unsaturated fats in nuts, and that can help people lower their cholesterol level. Also, the same effect of lowering the cholesterol is produced by another substance contained by most nuts, called plant sterol.

Omega 3 fatty acids are another key component of the nuts, which should convince people to consume them. Mostly found in fish, omega 3 is helpful in preventing heart rhythms that cause a heart attack. If you are a vegetarian, or you simply don’t like fish (a product which also contains omega 3), you can always choose some nuts as they are the best plant in the world to provide you with this component.

Containing fiber, nuts prevent diabetes and can give each person who’s worried about their silhouette a satiety feeling.

Last, but not least, it is important to note that nuts are also a significant source of vitamin E. Vitamin E proved to be effective in stopping the development of plaques in arteries. This plaque can cause coronary artery disease, chest pain, and even heart attack.

And if all these benefits do not convince to consider nuts among your daily alimentary habits, then you should remember again that nuts can reduce prostate cancer mortality rates with 34 percent.
